RAAH Kicks-off 2015 With Argento Unveil

Emerging label RAAAH kicked off 2015 with the label’s new collection ‘Argento’ which was unveiled at PURE London 8-10 February 2015.

2014 proved a stellar year for RAAAH. The label launched in April, debuted the premiere collection ‘Fly/Fly High’ at PURE and showcased on the runway for the first time at Africa Fashion Week London 2014. Keen to launch the label in Africa, RAAAH also had two successful runways on the continent first in designer Rahima Mohamed’s native Zimbabwe during Zimbabwe Fashion Week and later at Africa International Fashion Week 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria in December 2014 which also saw the designer unveil a few teaser pieces from the sophomore collection ‘Argento’.

“PURE London SS14 was the birth of my first RAAAH collection. At the time I felt like a rookie on a pitch, placed amongst the messiahs of fashion trade. This February, I launched my new A/W15 collection, which was even more exciting, also as the audience reception was very good,” Mohamed said. “The great aspect of PURE are the new working relationships you build with brands and businesses, and the network of support you build while also getting valuable advice on branding, marketing, resources and business development.

‘Argento’ means silver in Italian, one of Mohamed’s favourite colours. “It's a colour that is exceptionally shiny and it expresses everything I want out of life, and a reflection of how I was feeling when I started brainstorming on this collection. Silver is how I want most women to feel – vibrant, stylish and classy,” the designer explains.

With tones of silver and gun metal at the forefront, the silhouettes once again are inspired by feminine strength which are fast becoming RAAAH’s driving design aesthetic, a blend of feminine fluidity with strong structures to signal powerful, confident women. The designer makes use of silk noil, silk bounded lace in pink and silver which give a subtle nod to African print, silk lurex, and fine brocade to create a range of contemporary pieces.

As RAAAH starts 2015 in style with PURE and gets ready to celebrate its first year in fashion, look out for the new lookbook set to be released soon and more surprises from RAAAH and the designer Rahima Mohamed, who was named one of the 15 African women to watch in 2015 by pan-African women’s bimonthly New African Woman.

Samsung Galaxy A Series: Fully metallic, slim and trendy

By Lolade  Bamigbola

Looking at its growth trajectory, it is safe to say that Samsung, which has been pushing the boundaries of design and utility of smart devices, has not relented in its innovative streak. The electronics giant believes that smartphones have become one of the most used devices by most people and design is extremely important (as this is what first catches the attention of consumers). This reality was evidenced in its just announced beautifully crafted, fully metallic uniform body, Galaxy A Series. The new Galaxy A series comes with a slim design, superior hardware and many more exciting features and benefits.

In December 2014, Samsung Mobile introduced the ‘A Series’ of devices into the market to consolidate on the gains of the ‘S Series,’ which connect to the consumers in a way no smartphone had done since the introduction of the first smartphone devices.  The first in the series of these new devices are the Galaxy A5 and A3. Many technology reviewers have in agreement that these are the phones for the stylish consumers.

Galaxy A3 and A5 series are quality offerings. Their upscale good look and slim, full metal unibody offer a feel-good tinge that only comes with deep satisfaction. In a country where people like to flaunt their gadgets, acquiring an ‘A Series’ Galaxy phone gives you a feeling that puts you in a class of your own. The phones are offered in a variety of colours, the black has a tuxedo good look while the white comes with a sheen that blends easily with a style-conscious woman’s wardrobe, among other arresting colours such as platinum silver, soft pink, champagne gold among others.

Design

Late last year, Samsung broke the all-polycarbonate mould of its Galaxy series with its metal-rimmed Galaxy Alpha, a move that was replicated on the Galaxy Note 4 and now the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3. The Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 remain Samsung’s slimmest smartphones to date and they incorporate the Galaxy Alpha's premium metal design with unique refined, full metal unibody designs.

Both devices feature removable back covers. Most of the all-metal smartphones from other manufacturers do not feature removable back covers - this is one of the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3 biggest strengths. The two hybrid SIM slots enable users decide between the option of two SIMS or alternating the second slot for memory expansion with a micro SD card.

Camera and video

Since US President, Barack Obama, was caught taking a selfie with other VIPs at Nelson Mandela's funeral, the world has come to reckon with how powerful it is to have a device that functions excellently with camera and video features.  The Galaxy A3 and A5 carry on Samsung's legacy for high-performing cameras with an advanced camera system that generates brighter and clearer images. The 13MP rear shooter of A5 is quite good, and so is the A3's 8MP camera. The front-facing 5MP selfie cam will simply blow your mind away. These phones do a fantastic job of capturing the scene in a wide angle. Samsung's selfie panorama worked like a charm, and captured at least five people in the frame with room for one more. Both Galaxy A3 and A5 offer superior mobile and social experience for young consumers who want to express their unique style while constantly staying connected.

Innovative photo-taking features, such as Wide Selfie, Palm Selfie, Animated GIF, Beauty Face Features, and Rear-cam Selfie let users capture attractive selfies in high resolution by automatically detecting and focusing on a person’s face. Users are also able to quickly and easily share photos or videos on their favorite social media channels with the devices' fast network speed of LTE Category 4 standard. With selfies becoming the norm among upwardly mobile young and stylish people, Samsung ‘A Series’ have introduced a new chapter to the manual of social media usage with specific reference to Instagram and Facebook. You can wow the world with your amazing selfies from your Galaxy ‘A Series’ phones.

Video watching on these devices is really impressing with a 1080p video player – where the colours come out as life-like as possible.

A Fantastic viewing experience

The Galaxy A5 and A3 are ideal for consumers seeking practicality and functionality as both devices are equipped with an extraordinary Super AMOLED display and Adaptive Display technology to deliver clearer images with deep contrast and better viewing angles for more vivid, colourful content in virtually any environment, even under bright sunlight.  This implies that images on both devices are sharper and more vivid than the display of other smartphones in their categories. Users can expect breathtaking visuals and crystal clear detail with this device. Its Super AMOLED panel delivers punchy colours and excellent black levels that make it a great canvas for watching videos and reading.

Powerful Performance

The Galaxy A5 and A3 are also outfitted with a very fast processor for seamless multi-tasking and faster browsing experience. In addition, the phones include popular features exclusive to Galaxy devices, such as Ultra-Power Saving Mode, Private Mode and Multiscreen, as well as adjustable audio, which intelligently adapts and enhances sound output based on the user’s surrounding environment. They are also powered by the latest Android operating system that provides users with stunning graphical capabilities.

Thanks to the battery device, users can enjoy multimedia content, be productive on the go, and capture great scenes and ideas whenever and wherever. Users can now enjoy top quality sound at any time and place without disturbance, because of less influence from surrounding sound with the improved adjustable audio function of both devices.

A Series Vs other Samsung Smartphones

The all-aluminum material and unibody construction of the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3 make them standout from other Samsung Galaxy smartphones or indeed, other phones in the market. Following the metal-framed (and plastic-backed) Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, the A5 and A3 represent Samsung's first stab at an all-metal build, and the first of its smartphones to seal in the battery completely.

One might think that luxe metal casings like these would house equally high-end specs, but the A series is actually defined by midrange specs that target a more youthful demographic.

The square-sided handsets look and feel good, similar to the Alpha, or like smaller, more maneuverable versions of the Note 4. They are also on the light side and are noticeably slim: in fact, they are the sveltest Galaxy phones yet.

The Galaxy A5 and A3 have extra themes like Samsung's TouchWiz interface, which allows for an intuitive handling of everyday tasks on the phones. Both phones also have their own unique touch sounds which other Galaxy phones do not have.

Excitingly, given the noisy outdoor conditions in most cities, the Galaxy A5 and A3 emphasize sound quality, with adjustable audio that increases volume when it detects competing background noise. Another feature, called Wise Voice, helps keep volume levels constant for the receiver even if you're holding the phone away from your face.

Conclusion

As part of Samsung Mobile's promise of commitment to the leadership and innovation in the smartphone market and the development of best-in-class products to meet the ever-changing needs of consumers, the latest Samsung Galaxy A series (the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3) are innovative smartphones which are well suited to today’s upwardly mobile youth. The phones are all about connectivity, sharing exciting moments with friends and family and being socially relevant. They offer a refined, trendy design and the most advanced functions to support social networking. Both devices empower young consumers to quickly and easily capture meaningful moments, connect to social media and share the content effortlessly. In other words, trendy youth can express themselves in greater style through the new Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3 devices.

2015 Elections: Nigerian Entertainers Take Sides

The 2015 Elections will now take place in March and Nigerian entertainers are not left in the fray as most of them are pitching tents with parties and candidates of their choice. But there seems to be a divide among entertainers; those in the movie industry seem to be tilted towards PDP mainly due to the intervention fund recently injected into the movie industry while the artistes are naturally attracted to APC due to the thriving environment Lagos provides the music industry. AHMED BOULOR writes…

APC:

Iceprince

Chocolate city rapper Iceprince Zamani seems to be putting his money where his mouth is by endorsing the candidature of Akinwumi Ambode of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The talented rapper who lives in the suburbs of Ogudu G.R.A in Lagos seem settled in his place of abode. This is coupled with the high octane night life and the numerous business opportunities that the city of Lagos presents to budding and established entertainers alike.

Iceprince was one of the many entertainers that showed up for the Corporate Lagos Exclusive dinner staged at the Oriental Hotels weeks ago- an event hosted by Akinwumi Ambode.

Banky W

EME Records honcho, Banky W is surely enjoying and reaping the benefits of his return to the city of Lagos after his stint abroad as a teenager.

The talented vocalist became an instant hit after he dropped his single titled Ojuelegba which got massive rotation on air and ever since that break, Banky W has not looked back.

The savvy R&B Pop act is a staunch supporter of the All Progressive Congress (APC); he was one of the prominent celebrity faces spotted at the Exclusive Corporate Dinner hosted by Akinwumi Ambode.

M.I

Jude Abaga aka M.I once spoke about how he left the city of Jos for Lagos with less than three thousand naira in his pocket and the burning ambition to become a successful rapper.

Suffice to say that M.I has achieved beyond his dreams as he is now being regarded as one of the best rappers on the continent of Africa. The rapper also has a handful of awards and recognition to show for his efforts.

At the Exclusive Corporate Lagos Dinner staged at the Oriental Hotels, M.I cited a scenario when he unexpectedly got a call from Ambode months after he dropped his debut album telling him (M.I) that he is a staunch fan.

That singular act according to M.I endeared him to the All Progressive Congress (APC). The fact that his career has also assumed unbelievable heights ever since he journeyed to Lagos is also considered a factor why the rapper is rooting for APC in the forthcoming elections.

Funke Akindele

Versatile thespian Funke Akindele has virtually spent the better part of her life building her already thriving career in the bubbly city of Lagos.

She became a regular face on tube after her appearance in the now rested teen soap titled, I Need To Know, while she was still an undergraduate of the University of Lagos.

Funke has grown to become a household name on the movie scene especially with the massive acceptance of her Jenifa series which went viral at the time.

A staunch member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Funke features prominently on the Ambode theme song video currently being aired on local TV stations.

KSB

Kennis Music signee Kenny Saint Best has been in the forefront of activities for the All Progressive Congress (APC) despite losing out during the party's House of Representatives primaries staged last year.

The gospel singer has been ever present at most APC political rallies and strategy meetings. She has even gone further by showing-off pictures from APC meetings with key chieftains including the party’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, Yemi Osinbajo and Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomole on social media.

Mavin Crew

The entire members of the Mavin Crew are staunch supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The crew has been spotted at some APC rallies staged in various locations in Lagos State.

Mavin honcho Don Jazzy is at the forefront of the campaign for APC as an ambassador. So also are: D'Prince, Dr. Sid, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, AproDija and Korede Bello.

The entire crew was spotted grinning from ear to ear at the APC Presidential Campaign staged at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos recently.

PDP:

Gordon's

Hilarious comedian Gordon's has never hidden his love for President Goodluck Jonathan and many say his love stems from the fact that himself and the President originate from the same region- Niger Delta.

Gordon’s was at the forefront of the campaign for Goodluck Jonathan operating as a spokesman on behalf of the rest of entertainers present on stage at the Presidential rally staged in Asaba Delta State about a week ago.

The spontaneous comedian spoke well about Jonathan’s administration and his policies asking the electorate to give him another chance to complete his transformation agenda.

Oritsefemi

Moments after delivering a scintillating performance at Jonathan’s Presidential Campaign staged last month at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, Oritsefemi Ekele Majemite was signed to be on the president’s campaign team.

The Double Wahala crooner was also spotted at the Akure leg of Jonathan’s campaign as he thrilled guest with his hit numbers and also released an official song for the president titled Great Jonathan.

Delta State born Oritsefemi is now smiling to the bank considering the fact that his take home package for each campaign appearance is said to be worth the while.

Mercy Johnson

Pregnant Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie has revealed that her alliance and loyalty in the forthcoming general elections will be entrusted in the hands of President Jonathan.

The ebony thespian squealed that much in a recent interview she granted a campus magazine published recently. Mercy pledged her support for Jonathan citing several reasons and noted that she believes he should be given more time to complete his transformation agenda.

“He deserves another chance. This is a president who has good intentions for the nation. He is by no means a perfect man but he means well and he has apparently learnt from his weaknesses in the last four years.

We must continue to believe in this great nation of ours. Nigeria belongs to us. The president cannot do it alone. He needs our help and we should not let him down at a time like this when he needs our votes to get the job done,” she said.

Patience Ozokwor

Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor is an exciting and controversial character any day. Mama G as she is popularly referred to as on screen is a staunch supporter of President Jonathan’s government and policies.

The intervention fund handed over to the movie sector seems to have heightened expectations of a better motion picture industry and Patience is excited at the prospects and positives that the cash injection portends for the movie industry in years ahead.

At the Presidential rally staged in Asaba Delta State about a week ago, the actress spoke glowingly about the strides of Goodluck Jonathan and his contribution towards the advancement of the motion picture industry and other sectors of the economy.

Toyin Aimakhu

Few days after weathering the storm of an alleged crash in her marriage, Nollywood actress Toyin Aimakhu was in the news again.

It is no news that several movie stars as well as their colleagues in other sectors of the entertainment industry have been drumming support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The fair skinned thespian unavoidably joined the fray after she shared a picture of herself with Nigeria's number one citizen, President Jonathan at a recent function.

The picture showed Toyin in front of the President with a little smiley pout as the President watches with a grin.

D'Banj

Eccentric entertainer D'Banj who goes by the moniker Kokomaster is an avid supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and he is also an enthusiast of the Agricultural policies of President Jonathan.

It could be recalled that the energetic performer made a firm statement in the minds of many when he penned an endorsement deal with the Beats by Dre franchise last year.

And in an attempt to show his unalloyed support for Mr President, D’Banj presented Jonathan with a specially designed edition of his customized Beats by Dre headphones.

The artiste made the presentation at the launch of the Youth Employment in Agriculture Programme (YEAP) by His Excellency, in Abuja late last year.

Africa Needs More Citizens, Not Leaders- Chude Jideonwo

The managing partner of Red Media Africa, Chude Jideonwo has once again stressed the need for Africans to rise up to their roles as citizens.

He made this call when he delivered his talk titled "Occupying the office of the citizen" at TEDxEuston. Jideonwo who explained that for Africa to keep up with the slogan "Africa Rising", then "we need young people who are gainfully employed and who can demand better governance or solve their own problems".

He further explained why his firm, TFAA one of the leading platforms under the group Red Media Africa, has plans for African citizenship schools where 200,000 people aged between 16-24 years will be taught how to influence their communities, demand better from their local and state governments and solve their own problems in spite of their leaders.

Further driving home his point, Jideonwo said that "the most important office in a democracy is not the office of the president but the office of the citizen" because it is when citizens show that they've had enough that government decides that enough is enough. Hence, as citizens we "cannot leave activism to activists".

"We need strong, patriotic, visionary leaders, but more importantly, we need strong, patriotic, visionary citizens who will tell their leaders what to do, who will get them to do it or who will shove them aside and show them how it's done", said Chude Jideonwo when talking about the need for active citizens.

During the talk, he also answered an age long question of whether he is an entrepreneur or an activist.

Meet Nigerian Make-Up Queen Who Built Her Own Beauty Empire

Tara Fela-Durotoye, Chief Executive Officer of Africa's leading beauty brand, House of Tara - iconic  for setting up the first make up studio and establishing Nigeria's first make up school in 2004 -  on CNN's African Voices, a weekly show that highlights Africa's most engaging personalities and explores the lives and passions of people who are shaping change in Africa.
Inspired by her stepmother's beauty routine and her work as a makeup artist during her time at the university, she says she was inadvertently drawn to cosmetics, after seeing "what makeup actually does to a woman in terms of self-esteem and confidence."
While talking about her passion for teaching, Tara said: "I am still a teacher, the only thing is that this time, I am not teaching maths or English. I am teaching enterprise: I am teaching makeup artistry as a platform for enterprise."
Making a difference to young lives is all part of the mission for the 37-year-old cosmetics queen Tara Fela-Durotoye.
"There are certain things telling you that you cannot make it; that you will not make it; that Nigeria is not a place where people make it," says Tara Fela-Durotoye. "I beg to differ."
She also revealed that the Tara beauty range was born out of her frustration at the lack of suitable cosmetics available in Nigeria, "Importers didn't know exactly what was right for Nigerian women," she says, "so I want to fill the gap while encouraging pride in home-grown glamor."
"A lot of the Tara products are named after either beauty icons or beauty philosophies in Africa," says Tara Fela-Durotoye. "For us it's about sharing the world and sharing our culture to the world."
Tara also harped on the brand's achievements, saying; "Today we have about 14 make-up schools across the country where people have been trained to become make-up artists. I can confidently say that for 80 % of the make-up artists that are active players in the industry today, either working as entrepreneurs or working within other beauty brands, are trained by House of Tara. And I think for me that is the greatest joy."

Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners Endorse Jonathan

The National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (NACTOMORAS) has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan's re-election bid.

Members of the association from different parts of the country gathered at the Goodluck/Sambo re-election office located in G.R.A on Monday to declare their support for President Jonathan.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Hassan, National President, NACTOMORAS informed that Mr. President can count on the votes of its members across the nation.

"It is important to mention that we have about 9million members across the country of which 40 per cent are university graduates and other unemployed school leavers. These riders have three or four members who are dependent on them. This association is the highest employer of Labour in the country and we stand here to be challenged in that regard.

"We have the blessing of the Board of Trustees, National Executive Council, State Executives and members of our association in 36 states of the federation including the FCT to support Jonathan's re-election.

"We have mobilised and mandated all our members to collect their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and urged them to come out en masse to vote accordingly. We have also directed all our members to be peaceful and law abiding during and after the elections and not engage in any act that may result to violence." He added.

Commending the association, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro who was also present at the event said it is a welcome development that the association is identifying with President Jonathan.

"It commendable to note that genuine people who fend so hard for themselves and their family have come to gather to identify with a man of humble background and a unifier per excellence.

"Buhari belongs to our past and that is where he should remain. He does not deserve to rule this country again because he is a dictator. He has nothing to offer this great country of ours.

"We are all aware of the efforts and transformation of President Jonathan in the area of education; he has built more than 138 Almanjeri schools in the north and if Buhari had done even half of what Jonathan has done for the north we would most probably not have the menace of Boko Haram.

"In four years, President Jonathan has built 12 universities, for the first time, Nigeria now exports cement, polio has been eradicated in Nigeria among many other transformational initiatives. Whatever we have, we must commit to ensure that President Jonathan returns to office." Koro added.

Ita Giwa Seeks More Women Participation In Politics

The question of the role of women in the sustenance of democracy has often been debated and the fact that democracy is the only form of government that recognises the importance of women in the business of government cannot be over emphasised.

To this end, Senator Princess Ita Giwa, under the aegis of Women in Action convened a Town Hall Meeting Friday for women in a bid to sensitize greater participation in politics.

Speaking at the occasion which was chaired by Senator Kofoworola-Bucknor, Ita Giwa called for more involvement of women in politics while also rueing the factors limiting
Nigerian women from active participation in politics.

"We have had such gathering of women in politics sometime in 2011 but it was a smaller one. I am a politician to the core and the only thing that keeps me busy aside politics is my charity work which focuses on children and the people of my constituency, Bakasi. The PDP has given me the platform to express myself and in this present dispensation there are a lot of women who hold key political appointments today.

"But I worry for the future of women who aspire to be politicians like me because of the many factors limiting their ambitions. I desire more women who have interest in politics to be free to aspire to become politicians. But today, more men are leaving their business to join politics. They use money saved to get party tickets while the women who do not have money are left to rue in their ambition.

"We need more women participation in politics because we need women to protect the interest of women in the political hierarchy of government. We want women who will win their mandate on merit. Without democracy, Nigerian women in politics wouldn't have come this far. Let us support democracy, continuity and our great president who has empowers the aspirations of the Nigerian woman," Ita Giwa added.

In her remarks, Chairperson of the event, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele pointed out the role of the Nigerian woman in the enshrinement of present day Nigerian democracy while also calling for a greater participation of women in politics.

"If not for the stand of certain women on the mandate of June 12; we will not be enjoying the benefits of democracy today. We are here today to celebrate ourselves. Today, 25 per cent of women man key political offices in the present dispensation. What we have is not enough, we are aiming for the 50 per cent because we make up 50 per cent of the population. We must be cautious as to who we vote in because we do not want to go backwards."

Delivering the key note address, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, who stood in for the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, said the elevation, empowerment and emancipation of the Nigerian woman is important.

"This welcome transformation for Nigerian women can only take place in an atmosphere of peace. However, this can only be sustained if we make deliberate efforts to maintain or position as advocates of peace in Nigeria. It is no longer news that for the first time in Nigeria, more women have been appointed to head key government ministries in the Federal Executive Council.

"Under President Goodluck Jonathan, we have an administration that has not only shown confidence in the women of our country, but has gone ahead to make room for them to play an active role in nation building."
