I Admire RMD- Akhere

Sultry singing sensation Akhere is surely bidding her time on the local music scene. The talented singer who has completed works on her debut album opens up on a host of issues in this interview with AHMED BOULOR.

Is there any particular reason why you became a musician?

My love and passion for music drove me into becoming a musician. As much as I tried in the past not to because I knew it required a lot of patience and perseverance. But I kept on hearing sweet voices in my head. Something just kept on taking me back. I tried working as a marketer even as a cabin crew but it never worked out. Fate led me back to a career I thought would not put food on my table. Music is who I am and when I sing nothing else matters.

Considering the quality of talent on the local scene, one wonders how you intend to stand-out from the rest?

We are all unique in our own ways. Irrespective of the massive competition among artistes. Its a healthy one I must say but my talent and aggressiveness on stage and passion for what I do I believe will set me apart from others.

What else do you do for a living aside music?

Aside music, I engage in small business by the side. I model too.

What was it like growing up for you?

It was okay, it was fun. I got the basic things of life and I'm grateful to God for that.

Are you in a relationship?

At the moment I'm not in a relationship.

Is there any pressure on you to get married by your parents?

No! There is no pressure to get married from my parents. They know better not to pressure me. They believe I'm not a kid anymore and its important for them to know I'm in love with the right guy and that he loves me too. Most importantly, I need to be sure of what I'm getting myself into. So no pressure at all.

While growing up, did you have any crush on any celebrity?

Yeah sure; I admire RMD a lot. (Laughs)

Were your parents mad at you when you wanted to be a musician?

Not at all. Infact my mum wanted me to go to music school because she saw it in me long ago even before I started to be sure this was what I wanted. My dad gave his blessings too.

So how did you feel when you got the opportunity to fulfill your dream as a musician?

Absolute satisfaction and fulfillment was what I felt when I eventually got the chance to try my hands in music. I'm grateful to God almighty; it has been an eventful journey thus far.

Have you completed works on your first album?

Yes I have but its been tough pushing it myself. I get to spend the money, doing the running around and stuff. So launching for me isn't the best bet. I've just been promoting singles.

Have you ever had any embarrassing moment on stage as a musician?

That was when I almost tripped on my heels and the audience screamed. But I managed to put up an impressive act on stage. So it died down almost immediately.

What was your first pay like as a musician?

My first pay was a surprise really. I wasn't expecting to be paid. But the man who invited me to perform at his birthday party gave me 500k. It was nice.

What do you think you will retire into after the glitz and glamour of music?

Its my dream to own an oil firm. Would also love to be useful in my state, the country and most importantly do charity works in my own little way. I have always tried doing that. But hopefully on a bigger scale.

Can you tell us the oddest thing you have done in recent times?

Putting my pride aside and having to apologise inspite of the degrading words thrown at my person. Just because I felt I was at fault.

What defines your style?

What defines my style is simplicity, class and finesse.
