The sprawling Chinese Consulate located in Victoria
Island played host to 50 students of Itedo Nursery and Primary School who were
invited over to partake in an Open Day activity by the Consulate General of the
People’s Republic of China in Lagos.
The excited students who were all smiles and eager to learn
were guided through a tour on how to learn Chinese Visa application procedure,
understanding the meaning of Chinese national flag, Chinese national Emblem and
the history of the Chinese Consulate.
Students of Itedo Primary School were also shown graphics
of the historical photographic gallery showing the bilateral exchange between
China and Nigeria. There was also an exhibition of Chinese paper cutting and a
video on modern development in China and Chinese traditional art performance including
Chinese Calligraphy and Martial arts.
Speaking at the Open Day get-together, the Chinese
Consulate General said, “this year marks the 10th anniversary of the
establishment of the strategic relationship between Nigeria and China and the
in-depth development of bilateral relations serves the fundamental interests of
the two countries and people.
“China attaches great importance to the development of
its ties with Nigeria, and is ready to work in concert with Nigeria to continuously
promote the strategic partnership between the two countries to a new high. This
cultural exchange is meant to provide an opportunity for the younger generation
of Nigerians especially students in schools, to have better understanding of
China and Chinese culture, the Open Day activity is also staged with the
purpose to promote the friendship between Nigeria and the people of Chinese,” he
said.
It could be recalled that in 2014, the Chinese Consulate
encouraged and coordinated some Chinese companies in Nigeria to join hands in
the China-Africa people-to-people Friendship Action to implement the Playground
Renovation Project to improve the campus environment of Itedo Primary School
which turned out to be successful.
Head Teacher, Itedo Nursery and Primary School, Mr Tolu
Ogungbulugbe expressed happiness at the gesture of the Chinese Consulate. “This
is a laudable gesture and the students feel excited about the cultural exchange
initiative. Such an effort will only further strengthen the ties between
Nigeria and China. The pupils will also have an to learn more about Chinese culture
and its people. You can see it on the f aces of the pupils that they are quite
excited about this experience and when they get back home they’ll have a lot to
tell and teach their folks and friends from the experience they have gathered
at this Open Day exchange.
“I must also commend the Chinese Consulate for the
efforts they have made to improve upon the structure of the school. The school
used to be a flooded arena but all that is a thing of the past, thanks to the
efforts of the Chinese Consulate. They have done a marvellous job considering
the fact that they have come to our aid on two occasions,” Mr Tolu added.
